SCOTLAND’S GOLF COAST HAS MORE THAN LINKS GOLF
Scotland’s Golf Coast has the greatest concentration of Championship links golf courses in the world. However, East Lothian‘s golf is not just about the coast. Scotland’s Golf Coast’s three inland courses add variety and accessibility to the region.
The Musselburgh
Previously known as Monktonhall, The Musselburgh was designed by James Braid. The Open Qualifying venue is the first of our 21 outside Edinburgh. Established in 1938, Braid decided that the course needed length. Even back then, Braid believed that a Championship course should be long. The course has evolved, however, and tees have been introduced to suit all standards of golfer.
Now known for its conditioning, drainage, wide fairways, and excellent greens, it is a popular member club, aswell as a welcome alternative to the links for visitors. You will be in good company too, as James Braid, Percy Alliss, Henry Cotton, and Alf Padgham all played in the inaugural match.
Royal Musselburgh
A little further outside Edinburgh is Royal Musselburgh. Another James Braid course, the club is the sixth oldest in the world. Steeped in history, the Old Club Cup, dating back to 1774, is the oldest trophy still competitively played for in the world. Royal Musselburgh is also home to the original ‘hole cutter’. It was in 1829 that the device was invented and is still on display at the club. 41/4 inches (10.8 centimetres) in size, a diameter that has millions scratching their heads every day.
The striking and ornate clubhouse, Prestongrange House lays claim to the Earls of Lothian as former residents. The year-round condition of the course is superb and is a very enjoyable and playable parkland 18 holes. With only four of the 14 par 4’s over 400 yards, there are plenty of chances for birdies.
Gifford
Heading towards the Lammermuir Hills is the scenic and tranquil 9 holes of Gifford – a true Hidden Gem. The small, friendly, and intimate clubhouse offers the ideal base to meet the locals, enjoy a bacon roll, and look forward to a slightly different challenge. There is no better kept secret than this unfathomably unknown, yet fun and amazing 9-holer. Shortlisted in this year’s Scottish Golf Tourism Awards (Best 9 Hole Course), maybe the secret is now out?
The hills as a backdrop and the Firth of Forth in the distance, the scene is set. Laid out in 1904, there have been only four head greenkeepers. The mature woodland and quality turf have created a course that is welcoming yet challenging enough to entice you post-morning on the links.
