It is often the case on a golf trip that the destination decision comes down to access. How easy is the destination to get to, can everyone get there, we don’t want to sit in the car for hours, are there flights, it’s too far between courses, and plenty of other deliberations. Fortunately, Scotland’s Golf Coast is in a prime location. Close to the capital, there are plenty of travel options and accessibility is easy.
Flights
Edinburgh International Airport is a mere 50 minute drive from Scotland’s Golf Coast’s furtherest golf course, Dunbar. For our partner courses, Dunstanburgh is still under two hours, and Newcastle airport is just down the road. Flights into Edinburgh are plentiful, with daily Transatlantic flights, aswell as many from the majority of popular European and UK destinations. There are direct flights from the Middle East too, so connections are easy from even further afield. The beauty of Edinburgh airport, and Newcastle airport for Northumberland, is the proximity to the courses once you have landed. There is no three-hour transfer, they are all on your doorstep, depending where you want to play and how long you will stay.
Car
For those from the UK, throwing your clubs into the back of a car and heading north, south or east is perhaps the easiest and best option. From Birmingham, it’s a little over five hours (three for Northumberland), or from northern counties, it’s a shorter two to four hours. The motorway network of the M1 and M6 send you in the right direction, then the A1, M74 and M8 take over. From the north, Dunbar is under three hours from Aberdeen, and it’s an easy route down. Probably more importantly, and this is relevant to those who hire a car at Edinburgh, all the East Lothian golf courses are within 30 minutes of each other. Convenience is everything on a golf trip.
Ferry
In the past couple of years, Scotland’s Golf Coast has been fortunate to work with our partner courses. Eyemouth, Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and Goswick are a natural extension to East Lothian’s coastline. These four tremendous golf courses also open up a plethora of new golf trip options. Ferries from the Netherlands arrive in Hull, or Newcastle. Access to Northumberland is short, then the next step to the Scottish Borders, then East Lothian even more straight forward. A golf trip from Continental Europe can either be to the English courses, England with a bit of Scotland, or Scotland with a bit of England. Variety is key.
Train
Rail is a slightly leftfield option. However, as our awareness and need for sustainability grows, train travel is becoming more popular. Sitting on a train from London and watching the world go by with a glass of wine and a good book is a relaxing and romantic way to get to Scotland. Stops at Berwick (for Northumberland), and North Berwick allow plenty of golfers to head north by train. As the train races on, the stop at Longniddry is another access point. Taxis or transfers are possible on arrival, or for North Berwick, both the East and West Links are easily reached on foot, as are our accommodation providers.
Trains, planes, automobiles and boats
Transport to Scotland’s Golf Coast, the Scottish Borders and Northumberland is catered for. Take your pick and cross it off the list. No matter where you are coming from, there is an easy option. Plan ahead and you will be able to pick up a great train, or plane fare. It is also a good idea to book your tee times at the same time, so you have everything in the diary and you can look forward to your 2026 golf break. Scotland’s Golf Coast can take the hassle away, so contact one of our accommodation providers or golf courses to create a great itinerary and many, many memories. We look forward to welcoming you.
