Eyemouth Golf Club

Located on the cliff tops of the spectacular Berwickshire coastline, Eyemouth is unique in that it is the only coastal course in the Scottish Borders. Only 70 minutes from Edinburgh, and a little over an hour and a half from Newcastle, Eyemouth is Scotland’s gateway golf course.

It is the 6th and 13th holes that receive the acclaim, but the course boasts 18 challenging holes that can be played year round. Its clifftop location affords fantastic views, but of course the elements come into play. The 6th is in Golf Monthly’s Top 100 Golf Holes in the UK, with the tee perched on one side of a gaping drop to the sea below, and the green an 8 or 3-iron away. Not for the feint-hearted, spectacular is the word. Meanwhile, the 13th is Scotland’s longest hole off the tiger tees, 656 yards to be precise. All golfers are invited to play both holes off the back tees.

Designed in 1894, the course hugs the rugged coastline, mixing a links and parkland feel. A 9-hole course for over 100 years, the current 18-hole layout was unveiled in 1997, combining elements of the original course, with newer holes on the higher ground above the town and North Sea. The clubhouse sits resplendent overlooking the course too, and the pretty harbour. With a warm welcome and delicious local cuisine, Eyemouth is the perfect course for a day trip if in Northumberland, to add variety to a longer stay on the coast, or for a stop off on the way to East Lothian from Newcastle.

COURSE DETAILS

Originally designed as 9 holes in 1894, the course became 18 holes in 1997. With stunning views of St Abbs, Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle, the course starts and finishes with a par 5. Four par 5s inward, make the back nine a longer test, but also provide the opportunity to score well. ‘A-Still-No-Ken’, No.6, is an Insta favourite and needs commitment and precision, whilst the 607 yard, 13th needs patience and focus.
